Hello, Guatemala

Updated: Jul 5, 2019

Winding through the chaotic market passageways of fresh mangoes, brightly coloured flowers and second-hand clothing, I realised just how much I craved this kind of adventure. Antigua, a UNESCO world heritage city, is more than I ever imagined. Nestled between Agua and Fuego, two active volcanoes; is a town where I found myself finding simple joys in the strangest ways. Street dogs who craved head pats followed me to local cafes where the inviting smell of freshly ground coffee beans beckons you inside. That's one reason to love Antigua - it's a chocolate and coffee oasis. The smiling faces of Guatemalan locals who sing out "Buenos Dias" as you stroll past each other is another reason I miss this part of Latin America.

Rising early and walking the cobblestone streets into the main town square, I recall paying extra attention to where I was walking. You don't want to topple over the uneven stone streets (as the footpaths are often non-existent). Antigua is a mixture of old meets new, where UNESCO heritage church ruins meet bustling ramen bars.

I accidentally left part of my soul in Antigua when I hoped in that Uber towards the airport. It makes me sad if I think about it, but until I'm back, it will remain firmly planted in Antigua. It is patiently waiting to reunite with my physical presence. I didn't expect to find a vibrant, Central American city, which would completely capture my heart.
